For most of its history, the automotive industry has relied on a unique way of purchasing auto parts, namely purchasing from suppliers as soon as they are needed. This method is called Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing, which aims to simplify production and eliminate the cost of storing spare parts in warehouses. However, the shortcomings of this approach have been revealed this year, because automakers are facing a shortage of chips and have almost no inventory to withstand short-term interruptions in the supply chain. Coupled with the drastic reduction of semiconductor orders in response to the early COVID-19 pandemic, the automotive industry is close to the bottom of the chip manufacturer's customer list, resulting in very limited supply chain inventories. Therefore, the JIT approach puts the automotive industry in a more dangerous position.
The semiconductor shortage threatens to reduce the auto industry's sales by 110 billion and force automakers to radically change the way they acquire electronic components, which is critical to contemporary car design. With computing and software becoming the core of modern cars, this crisis has also forced auto industry executives to rethink their supply chain strategies and consider internal chip design.
